It's spring already and before too long we will be in sun bathing weather facing the question of to tan or not to tan!
I think it 's fair to say that almost everyone looks and feels better with a little color.
So here is some good news, the sun is your number one source of Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is an important part of your Optimum Health helping to keep bones strong fighting fatigue and depression.
Actually, Vitamin D is not a vitamin at all but a hormone.
It cannot be produced by the body on it's own and is generated by the body through unprotected exposure to the sun.
So if you are slathering up in sunscreen before heading out into the sun every time chances are you are not getting the exposure you need to generate optimum Vitamin D levels.
Lack of Vitamin D is common today.
In fact physicians that test for vitamin D deficiency report that 85% of their patients are deficient in it.
Some symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency are fatigue, depression, osteoporosis and inability to lose weight.
Two hours a week in the sun unprotected can raise your Vitamin D levels up to a healthy level.
Smaller amounts of Vitamin D can be ingested through food as well.
Wild salmon for example is an excellent source of Vitamin D.
Going out in the sun unprotected is somewhat unfashionable these days with health professionals preaching of skin cancer caused by the sun and indoor tanning beds.
So if you must use sunscreen consider the ingredients in it before you use it.
Many are loaded with harmful toxins that turn into carcinogens when exposed to the heat of the sun.
Dr. Raymond Francess and other health professionals suggest that this could be an indication of why skin cancer has been on the rise over the last decade.
Look for a natural organic sunscreen product or use the ancient Mediterranean way a high quality olive oil to offer protection from the sun if you plan to be out in it for long periods of time.
A sun tan is not harmful to your health.
A sun burn on the other hand is.
So get a tan this summer raise your Vitamin D levels and take another step towards your Optimum Health!
